A ‘dry garden’ giving prospect over the city was created at Manor Top, Sheffield, by spreading waste material from local excavations to form a circular plinth. At its centre a pit was JCB-dug to reveal soil profiles of previous industrial uses including a dark coke/coal layer. Large stones and concrete slabs–also waste site materials– were arranged to form bridges, seats and giant steps to pit. The project was based on the environmental design maxim: ‘add nothing, take nothing, use everything’.
